<Grammars>


1. Action verb stem+ 을 수 있다/ㄹ 수 있다, 을 수 없다/ㄹ 수 없다: to be able to, not be able to. verb stem ending with a consonant, then combine with 을 수 있다/없다. verb stem ending with a vowel, then combine with ㄹ 수 있다/없다.

예) 돼지 고기를 먹을 수 없어요. (can't eat pork), 한국어를 읽을 수 있어요. 영화를 볼 수 있어요.

* '못~/-지 못하다' and '-을/ㄹ 수 없다' are same meaning. '못~/-지 못하다' is commonly used. For more details. please click the link G05. Negative sentences


2. Action verb stem+ 을 줄 알다/ ㄹ 줄 알다, 을 줄 모르다/ㄹ 줄 모르다: know how to~, don't know how to~. verb stem ending with a consonant, then combine with 을 줄 알다/모르다. verb stem ending with a vowel, then combine with ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다.

예) 요리할 줄 알아요. 피아노 칠 줄 알아요 (know how to play piano). 수영할 줄 몰라요 (don't know how to swim)


* "을/ㄹ 수 있다/없다' and '을/ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다' can be both interpreted as 'can/can't' in English. However, '을/ㄹ 줄 알다/모르다' is used because the speaker hasn't learned so doesn't know how to do while "을/ㄹ 수 있다/없다' is used when the speaker has ability or disability regardless of learning.
